I wrote Pale in 2006, but I never recorded the middle crescendo piece as I did not have, and did not know anyone who had, the dexterity to play such a solo. Four years later though, and through the power of Twitter, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Tenacious D's lead guitarist, John Konesky who, as well as playing the rhythm guitar throughout, really nailed the guitar solo build to the crescendo.
The journey to Pale
After I launched my website this year, John approached me to work with him to create Trainwreck’s new website and associated forum, blog and merchandise sites. Trainwreck is a side-project of Tenacious D founder, Kyle Gass, which includes John Konesky and fellow D bass guitarist John Spiker.
The musical collaboration with Pale came about through a mutual respect for each others abilities. I created a guide track where I played all of the instruments and explained as best I could how I envisaged the centre piece to be played. John really came through there and produced a blinding solo. Keeping it an international project, the awesome drums were provided by Dave Clubb from Perth, Australia. A vocal version of the track featuring Ireland's comedienne, actress and singer, Tara Flynn, is in the pipeline.
Without Twitter, this simply would not have happened. I’ve seen
Tenacious D live a couple of times, but can’t imagine being able
to get John Konesky’s attention from the crowd!
